Citizenship Outreach Coordinator
The Citizenship Outreach Coordinator (VISTA member) will aid in the growth and sustainability of a program that is vital to the entire community by empowering local lawful permanent residents to contribute and participate more fully in their communities. Our Office of Immigrant Services (OIS) provides low cost immigration legal assistance. OIS is the only US Department of Justice (DOJ) Recognized office in all of East Tennessee. By providing immigration services to individuals and families in the East Tennessee communities, OIS is helping reduce the instance of poverty by providing affordable services thus reducing the likelihood of going into debt in order to obtain citizenship. Together with our community partnerships, individuals are more likely to gain economic stability. The East Tennessee region has a vibrant immigrant community, many of which are eligible to naturalize. Those who are lawful permanent residents might choose not to naturalize and become US citizens for any number of reasons including: feeling the citizenship test is too difficult, inadequate English language skills, costs, lack of knowledge, and fear. The VISTA member will assist in reaching more of the immigrant/refugee population in order to educate them on the naturalization process, the importance of naturalization, and identify barriers. Additionally, the VISTA member will connect individuals and families with local resources to aid in securing affordable housing, attain economic self-sufficiency through employment, increase English proficiency, and increase financial literacy. The ultimate goal is to strengthen families and communities by reducing poverty within the communities.
