NYCEM Food Distribution VISTA Summer Associate 1

The Emergency Home Delivery operation began at the end of March in response to the COVID-19 crisis. In the first eight weeks, the City has provided over 10 million meals to New Yorkers in need. Working towards the larger mission of the Get Food NYC program, to make sure no New Yorker goes hungry, the Emergency Home Delivery program provides home-delivered food to people who are both COVID-19 vulnerable and food insecure. The NYC Emergency Management Department (NYCEM) is responsible for overall management, while citywide distribution sites are managed by NYC Parks or NYC Sanitation Department employees with an interagency workforce of approximately 20-40 staff/site. Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) drivers arrive at sites and deliver meals to the doors of individuals. VISTA Summer Associates will support the program in the following ways: check in with TLC drivers, give them their routes and the meals, and check them out at the end of the day; manage the collection of data; administer and report on incoming and outgoing commodities; oversee vendor deliveries and calculate the inventory burn rate; support site staff with supplies, keep the site clean and organized and enforce social distance guidelines; unload vendor deliveries and assist the Inventory Controller with tracking, verifying, and reporting all incoming and outgoing food commodities; and deliver food on foot from mobile distribution hub or central location to individual residence (contactless delivery). While the work will be physically challenging (on your feet most of the day, lifting and moving boxes, mostly working outside rain or shine), this is an opportunity to support a constantly evolving program at a local level in response to a global pandemic. You will work as part of a team and gain key skills including leadership and coordination. Most importantly, you will know at the end of a hard day you are responsible for feeding the most vulnerable New Yorkers during a time of crisis.
