NYC DOE STH Community Coordinator VISTA Summer Associate

In New York City, over 100,000 students each year are affected by homelessness. Nearly two thirds live doubled up-due to economic hardship, and the remaining third resides in the city shelter system. These students miss more days of school because of the disruptions caused by homelessness and poverty, negatively affecting academic achievement and on-time graduation. The DOE Students in Temporary Housing (STH) team in the Office of Community Schools is dedicated to leading efforts within our 1.1 million student school system to improve the lives of these students through whole child supports. Our office supports over 300 school social workers, Community Coordinators and shelter-based intake and service specialists, providing training, guidance, and problem-solving support. We’re seeking applicants who are experienced in writing, working with spreadsheets and data, designing communications, and managing complex tasks on their own initiative to assist our staff development efforts for Community Coordinators. The VISTA Summer Associate will: support the convening of working groups on various topics, such as improving school attendance and addressing social-emotional needs; identify best practices in the field and draft guidance materials, training presentations, and tip sheets to lift up innovation across the STH team; and create and analyze surveys and other information gathering tools to better understand needs and opportunities in real time. The STH team offers the VISTA Summer Associate a unique opportunity to work at a senior management level within a complex, dynamic, and demanding city agency on some of the most challenging problems of practice.
