NYC DOE OCS School Support Team VISTA Summer Associate
 
 
 
The Office of Community Schools (OCS) is part of the Division of School Climate and Wellness in the NYC Department of Education. In addition to helping schools implement the Community Schools strategy, our office: leads policy and supports for all students in temporary housing; supports most school-based afterschool programs across the City; and oversees attendance policies and practices. Across our work streams, we support schools to work with Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to become places where children have opportunities to learn, gain skills, create joy, and have experiences that ignite curiosity and allow children to discover their passions and talents. The School Support Team VISTA Summer Associate will directly report to the Executive Director of Community Schools in OCS. This person will join the School Support team, which is the largest team in OCS. The School Support Team VISTA Summer Associate will develop deep knowledge of the community school strategy and contribute to strengthening our support to schools and Community School Directors. This person will lead the collection of promising practices that CBOs have developed during remote learning to promote student engagement, and document and analyze the work CBOs are doing to support students and families. He/she/they will learn about effective school and community partnerships and will also develop their leadership, communication. and organizational skills in this position.

Member Duties : The VISTA Summer Associate will revise and update Community School Director (CSD) and Program Manager resource guides. This person will also lead the collection of promising practices from Community Based Organizations (CBOs) during the current school closure to promote student engagement as well as the work CBOs are doing to support students and families. Tasks include: adding content to both guides about specific community school funding streams and requirements; incorporating into the Program Manager Resource Guide specific content related to a 30-60-90 day on-boarding process for new CSDs and Principals; collecting anecdotes, stories, pictures, videos, etc., from Program Managers and CSDs regarding CBO support during school closure and remote learning; and creating a resource page on the OCS website documenting CBO promising practices in increasing student engagement.
