2020 – DCAN #2 Community Outreach– Pathways to Employment

Students in Detroit are in dire need of assistance. Over 55% live in poverty and the unemployment rate in Detroit is nearly three times higher than in neighboring counties. The Detroit College Access Network (DCAN) fights this systemic poverty by providing students with the knowledge and skills they need to apply for and attend post-secondary institutions. Armed with an advanced education, these students are able to escape the cycle of poverty. As a VISTA serving with DCAN you will expand its community engagement efforts in order to create a broader Detroit college-going culture. You will promote and expand DCAN's Get Schooled Detroit Challenge, a competition that incentivizes schools and their students to use a gamification platform to earn college knowledge digital badges. You will also assist with the Score Your Four SAT preparation program, which helps students earn their Detroit Promise scholarship. In expanding DCAN's community footprint you will also manage DCAN's social media and newsletter efforts. Help transform Detroit into a college-going capital!
