2020 – DCAN #1: School Outreach – Pathways to Employment

Students in Detroit are in dire need of assistance. Over 55% live in poverty and the unemployment rate in Detroit is nearly three times higher than in neighboring counties. The Detroit College Access Network (DCAN) fights this systemic poverty by providing students with the knowledge and skills they need to apply for and attend post-secondary institutions. Armed with an advanced education, these students are able to escape the cycle of poverty. As a VISTA serving with DCAN you will help expand its outreach efforts into Detroit schools through various events and initiatives. You will plan and execute the Detroit College Day event to excite high school juniors and seniors and inspire a college-going culture in the city of Detroit. Last year 15 high schools and over 850 students attended! You will also assist schools in implementing FAFSA Completion, College Month, and Decision Day events to get their students prepared for college. The support you provide schools will in turn allow them to support their students to post-secondary attainment and a brighter future.
