TSC VISTA 2020: Fruit Belt Community Land Trust

The Service Collaborative (TSC) VISTA Program mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to function in organizations, government agencies and educational institutions. Members focus on expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all and creating healthy futures for the residents of New York. Our goals are to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Service Collaborative VISTA program has partner organizations in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Geneva. During their term of service members will receive support from our VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY. Our support includes monthly trainings, a social network of fellow members and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : Through collective ownership of land in the Fruit Belt, Fruit Belt Community Land Trust (FBCLT) will foster democratic participation in community wealth building strategies, including affordable housing development, cooperative businesses and other values-aligned development, which build a community-controlled economy, strengthen the distinct qualities and historical character of the Fruit Belt, and serve the common good. The VISTA will be tasked with helping to develop the institutional capacity, infrastructure, and sustainability of FBCLT. This will include research on best practices for anti-displacement strategies, co-facilitating a 5 year strategic planning process, and developing a design competition with the local school of architecture and planning. The VISTA will also assume project management duties such as developing RFPs in accordance with FBCLT policy, planning a small fundraiser, and coordinating a design competition for local planning and architecture students.
