Opportunity Council – WIHS Elder Volunteer Program VISTA YR1

Whatcom Intergenerational High School is a new innovative high school. We are rooted in equity and committed to ensuring underserved and low-income students get access to an experiential, rigorous and student-centered education through Phenomenon-based and Intergenerational Learning. Learners at WIHS investigate problems and curiosities from multiple perspectives and vantage points in real contexts and are supported by elders and Traditional Providers. In order to successfully implement intergenerational learning, we need to develop intergenerational learning curriculum, recruit and train elders and evaluate elder programming. Elders will support student learning through community circles, discussing High School and Beyond Plans, and participating with students in Phenomenon-based learning enrichment activities and tutoring. The WIHS Elder Volunteer Project will be designed to support low income youth, Latinx and Indigenous youth in gaining the academic, social and cultural support needed for success in H.S. and college. The VISTA member will be a critical part of the WIHS team in developing curriculum, evaluating elder programs, developing an elder recruitment plan, evaluating elder programming and seeking funds to ensure that the WIHS Elder Project is sustainable long-term. Elders and Traditional Providers are a critical component in helping students to develop the dispositions and competencies to become financially independent and establish meaningful relationships to better themselves, their families and communities. The Opportunity Council VISTA Cohort in Bellingham includes monthly team meetings, Professional Development opportunities, fun team-building events, and 4 annual Days of Service.
