Opportunity Council – FFB Community Engagement VISTA YR1

The Foothills Food Bank’s mission is to distribute quality, nutritious food to community members in need, and to deliver services with respect and dignity. The Foothills Food Bank has provided free supplementary groceries to families in East Whatcom County since 1986. Our Tuesday morning distribution serves an average of 150 families each week. We also deliver groceries to home bound adults and families within the community who are unable to access our weekly distributions. East Whatcom County qualifies as a rural food desert based on the United States Department of Agriculture’s definition and while convenience stores in East Whatcom county sell food, these stores provide only a limited selection of food at very high prices that are inaccessible to many of our community members. Our community has become increasingly food insecure with little access to quality foods and we have seen that more and more families within the community need our assistance. We are seeking to expand our programs to include both a second weekly distribution time in the evenings as well as two Saturday distributions each month. These additional weekly distributions will allow more families access to our services and supplemental groceries each week. The work of the Foothills Food Bank seeks to continue to reach these high levels of need in our community to ensure that all residents are fed, nourished, and have the resources to access the food they need. The Opportunity Council VISTA Cohort in Bellingham includes monthly team meetings, Professional Development opportunities, fun team-building events, and 4 annual Days of Service.

Member Duties : This VISTA will support the Foothills Food Bank by expanding our volunteer program. They will review and enhance the current training and orientation system for volunteers to increase the volunteer system capacity. They will encourage culturally appropriate and health forward choices among community members by designing engaging and informative programming. The VISTA member will also work to develop our network of volunteers by expanding our volunteer recruitment efforts among the schools and businesses within East Whatcom County. Finally, the VISTA member will work alongside the Executive Director to increase the funding capacity of the Foothills Food Bank to help promote the expansion from one to two weekly community food distributions. These efforts will help move people out of poverty by creating opportunity for meaningful engagement as partners for a healthy community and by increasing access to a healthy food, allowing for next steps to economic sufficiency.
