Opportunity Council–WIHS Recruitment & Enrollment VISTA YR1

Whatcom Intergenerational High School is a new innovative high school opening in September of 2020. We are rooted in equity and committed to ensuring underserved and low-income students get access to an experiential, rigorous and student-centered education through Phenomenon-based learning. In order to successfully implement Phenomenon-based learning students need access to a variety of learning opportunities created with community and business partners throughout Whatcom County. These partners will support student learning through enrichment activities during the school day, after school, and during summer breaks. Internships will be set up to provide real world learning opportunities so that students can explore their passions and learn the skills necessary for success in career, college and life. The WIHS Enrollment program will be set up to support economically disadvantaged young people in receiving the academic, social, emotional and cultural support they need to be successful graduating from high school, and to gain the resources and competencies necessary to be accepted into and successful in pursuing a post-secondary degree of their choosing. WIHS is planning to work with students who qualify for free or reduced lunch, Latinx and Indigenous youth. The research is clear, when youth living in poverty have access to high quality enrichment activities (during school and after-school), they perform better in school, engage in more after school activities and broaden their perspectives on who they are and who they want to become in life. The VISTA member will help students exit poverty by increasing high school graduation rates and college acceptance and success by developing and expanding access to high-quality educational opportunities at WIHS. The Opportunity Council VISTA Cohort in Bellingham includes monthly team meetings, Professional Development opportunities, fun team-building events, and 4 annual Days of Service.
