United Way Spokane: Zone Project Youth Leadership

The Northeast Community Center (NECC) strives to improve the quality of life for residents of Northeast Spokane, with emphasis on social, health, economic, educational and recreational needs. NECC is the backbone organization for The Zone Project, a place-based collective impact initiative that builds upon strengths and aligns resources and programs across multiple organizations and sectors to affect transformative, measurable change in the 8 neighborhoods of Northeast Spokane that feed students to Shaw and Garry Middle Schools. Our vision is strong neighborhoods where youth are safe, residents are engaged, and all families can thrive. Through resident engagement and strong organizational partnerships, we are implementing a 10-year plan to improve health, housing, safety, education and economic opportunity in NE Spokane. This is the last year of a VISTA project to develop capacity and increase effectiveness of multi-partner initiatives that bridge opportunity and grow educational achievement for low-income children and youth in Northeast Spokane, thus breaking the cycle of poverty. We will know we have been successful by measuring student success in reaching specific milestones the community has identified, such as Kindergarten readiness, graduating high school on-time, developing specific career skills, and social emotional attributes. This position is in Spokane, in Eastern Washington, about 20 miles west of Idaho and 110 miles south of the Canadian border. Benefits include $479 biweekly living allowance. VISTA Members who successfully complete the year receive their choice of either a Segal Education Award (valued at approximately $6,195) or an $1,800 cash stipend. AmeriCorps VISTA is also the only AmeriCorps program where you can earn federal non-competitive eligibility, giving you an edge in the federal hiring process. We can offer a monthly bus pass as needed.

Member Duties : This is the last year of a 3-year VISTA project. The Year 3 VISTA Member will build capacity to serve youth in The Zone by using the 2020 Youth Assessment Report to guide community collaboration to support the goals of Northeast Spokane youth. The VISTA will use the data to develop an Expanded Learning Opportunity (ELO) team specific to supporting opportunities for youth 12-18 years old and facilitate team meetings and guide planning efforts. The VISTA will support a team of youth who will co-design programming as well as build the capacity of two organizations that are willing to intentionally engage youth on their Boards or in their leadership and planning of programming and activities for ELO. In collaboration with other Zone Project staff, the VISTA will create a system/strategy to connect youth and their families to opportunities like job training, college and career readiness, financial education, while developing their leadership skills.
