VOLS COVID Response Project II

VOLS’s COVID Response Project in NYC provides pro bono legal assistance to low-income seniors, veterans, unemployed workers, and frontline health care workers. We leverage the pro bono assistance of volunteer attorneys who draft and execute a full range of life planning documents for our low-income senior clients; veterans, immigrants, and LGBTQ seniors. Our Veterans Initiative, which aims to provide life planning legal services to elderly and disabled veterans through a lens of military and veteran cultural competency. In response to COVID19, we are launching a Frontline and Healthcare Workers Initiative to assist those working on the front lines providing healthcare to COVID19 patients with the life planning documents necessary to make sure their health care decisions and wishes related to disposition of property and care of children are respected when they no longer can make those decisions themselves. Successful applicants are committed to serving vulnerable clients, low-income seniors, low income workers affected by the pandemic and disabled veterans. Strong organizational skills, follow through, flexibility, and attention to detail; exceptional oral and written communication skills; and a background in effective community outreach and partnership-building abilities are a plus. This position is a part of an 11-member VISTA cadre at Fordham Law School’s Feerick Center for Social Justice (FC). In addition to the camaraderie and network the team brings, you will also have monthly check-ins with FC senior staff, weekly program meetings with VOLS senior staff, monthly professional development workshops led by the VISTA Leader, and opportunities to attend NYC networking and training events. If you are interested in pursuing a legal career, this is a wonderful opportunity for you.
