Homeless Verification & Affordable Housing Research VISTA

We are the Community Action Agency serving Boone and Winnebago counties; engaging, educating and empowering people in poverty to build stronger communities through programs and partnerships. This position will serve Winnebago, Boone, and Dekalb counties, Illinois. Most work will take place in Rockford, IL. According to the By-Name list kept by the local system, there are about 270 homeless individuals and families awaiting housing placements in the area. Many of those people will be entering housing programs where homeless verification is required for entry. However, we do not currently have the system or resources in place to verify people living in places not meant for human habitation. This position will identify better ways to verify homeless status and help link those people to affordable housing options. Rockford has been very successful in reducing our overall homelessness. We have ended veteran and chronic homelessness by using innovative strategies. This project will allow us to continue that innovation and move toward ending all homelessness. By having the information in place to verify homeless status, we will be able to get folks off the streets sooner and connect them to the affordable housing. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities. This position can start in June, July, or August of 2020. All applicants will be afforded equal employment opportunity without discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, marital status, national origin or ancestry, citizenship status, age, physical or mental disability unrelated to ability, sexual orientation, military status, order of protection status or unfavorable discharge from military service.
