The Learning Community - School Culture VISTA

Founded in 2004, The Learning Community is a nationally-recognized public charter school that serves more than 574 K-8 students from Central Falls, Pawtucket and Providence, three of the four “core cities” of poverty in Rhode Island. As a result of the quality of our partnerships with families and our innovative teaching practices, our students are dramatically outperforming their peers, despite a poverty rate nearly twice the state average. 82% of our students are low-income, 94% are children of color, and 34% are English language learners. Our work has been recognized nationally by The NY Times, Washington Post, MSNBC Primetime, and Chelsea Clinton came for a visit. Our nation has grown to accept a link between poverty and student achievement. However, our students have closed the most significant student achievement gap between students of color and white students in the country (Annie E. Casey Foundation). Despite a poverty rate of 82%, which is significantly higher than both Rhode Island and Massachusetts, on the 2018 RICAS standardized test: The Learning Community’s low-income, Latino, Black and English Language Learners had a higher proficiency rate than their demographic peer groups in Rhode Island, Boston and throughout Massachusetts in both Math and English Language Arts. The Learning Community seeks a savvy, detail oriented, flexible and capable problem solver with demonstrated initiative, and excellent organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills to build our capacity to teach students to be strong, supportive community members, through listening to and working alongside partners. They will organize systems, support and recruit lasting community partners, and research and design curriculum for implementation. They will gather data about important issues facing our community, gather research for students to study the issue, and locate allies to partner with.

Member Duties : The School Culture VISTA will support several initiatives to improve and support multiple aspects of a healthy school climate. Students learn about social and civil responsibility in a variety of ways, including through the cultural work of our student organizations, Social Action Projects, and reserved times during Advisory to teach social and emotional competencies. This work at The Learning Community is still in its infancy and the VISTA will be a crucial part of growing it. They will identify existing curricula connected to the various domains of social-emotional competencies and then work to embed the curricula into existing curricula. Second, the School Culture VISTA will investigate and identify effective practices related to maintaining a connection with Alumni and enrolling them in initiatives designed to improve climate. Lastly, they will work to increase learner agency and student voice in the daily operations and long-term planning of our school.
