'20-'21 Literacy & Learning Outreach & Engmt VISTA, UWTC

The South Sound Reading Foundation positively impacts our region by promoting the reading and literacy of children, youth, and families living in poverty. Many children and youth struggle in school because they read below grade-level. They do not have the resources and/or the information to successfully engage in reading, and reading is the most fundamental skill a child will need in school and in life. According to the Center for Improvement of Early Reading Achievement, “Access to books and educational materials is the single biggest barrier to literacy development in the United States and beyond. If we can solve the problem of access, we will be well on the road to realizing educational parity–a goal which has eluded this country for generations.” That is why the South Sound Reading Foundation is out in our community every day talking to families about the importance of reading, getting kids excited about reading with free literacy engagement programming such as story times, book clubs and book talks, and providing free, high-quality, age-appropriate books through our book van and other outreach programming. By educating families about the importance of reading together, engaging kids in reading enrichment programming, and providing children and youth living in poverty with high-quality, age-appropriate books, the South Sound Reading Foundation addresses reading and literacy, working to eventually dissolve the perpetual link between poverty and literacy. The VISTA will be a member of the Greater South Sound VISTA team, made up of 19 other VISTA members. The UWTC VISTA team is supported by the VISTA Leader, who coordinates professional development opportunities, provides individualized support and resources, and supports the program’s success.

Member Duties : The VISTA will help formalize the Reading Foundation’s reading enrichment programming. The VISTA project will build off of the work of the prior VISTA by refining and developing programming based off of data collected in the 2020 program surveys. Combined with research into best practices, the VISTA will implement program changes to better meet community needs and create and implement program assessments and measurement tools to ensure programs are effectively serving our community. The VISTA will build program support by growing a well-trained volunteer pool by assessing, revising, and formalizing volunteer recruitment, training, and retention processes and networking with community members and service providers. The VISTA will work with the executive director, our Program Committee, and the people we serve to create and implement changes to not only provide maximum benefit and impact, but also to ensure our programs and assessment processes are sustainable.
