'20-'21 Veterans Community Connection Coordinator VISTA

We at Quixote Communities strongly believe that everyone deserves safe and affordable housing. We work to provide housing for our veteran community members experiencing homelessness in Pierce County, Washington. We are a tiny house village that offers communal living with rich peer mentorship and support. Our organization works side-by-side with residents to help them reach their individual goals and to connect them with various community services. Our houses are economically efficient, costing less than half of what it costs to build your average apartment. We also leave a smaller footprint with our simple 176 square-foot homes. But the most rewarding part of it all, is that our residents are no longer homeless. Housing is a primary need, first and foremost. Once residents are housed, they are then able to work on other aspects of their lives such as education, employment, substance use, physical health, and mental health. This is no easy feat. Our residents are resilient survivors and we see their successes here every day.

Member Duties : This project focuses on alleviating poverty by increasing access to life sustaining resources. The VISTA will build capacity by creating a system and procedure for recruiting, coordinating, tracking, training, and acknowledging volunteers and donors. This will increase transportation access for residents, community gardening and landscaping opportunities for residents, opportunities for community dinners, and donations and support. It will also provide engagement opportunities for local schools, faith-based communities, and other interested parties. The VISTA project aims to allow community members to build relationships with village residents while increasing community connection for the residents. The VISTA will build the necessary systems and tools to create a volunteer database and scheduler, recruit and train volunteers, coordinate volunteer events, and develop an annual volunteer appreciation, establishing systems that can be sustained long after the VISTA’s service is complete.
