UMN College of Pharmacy Duluth VISTA, IA & MN Campus Compact

The Mission of the University of Minnesota is threefold, focusing on Research, Education, and Outreach. Research: We seek new knowledge that can change how we all work and live. At UMN, students do research alongside top professors in all majors. Education: We prepare students to meet the great challenges facing our state, our nation, and our world. Outreach: We apply our expertise to meet the needs of MN, our nation, and the world. We partner with communities across MN to engage our students, faculty, and staff in addressing society's most pressing issues. This VISTA position will focus on community-based solutions to the opioid crisis, which is currently the most critical public health issue in northeastern MN, focusing on capacity building for rural northeastern MN counties and Tribal Nations working with the UMN on a variety of local and federal grants. The VISTA will build on existing partnerships with local, regional, state, and national agencies to enhance opioid prevention efforts and build systems to reduce overdose and expand understanding and options for treatment and build community Recovery Capital. The VISTA will partner with local organizations that support harm reduction, public health practice in substance use, and translational research to reduce the impact of the opioid crisis. This project is part of the Community Corps VISTA Program, operated by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact. The program strives to eliminate poverty through campus-community partnerships by placing full-time capacity building support in nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions. There are three focus areas, this project being in the Health Corps, which supports sites in long-term approaches to the social determinants of health. This includes meeting low-income student needs and a variety of projects with health-focused community organizations. Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.
