2020-2021 Communications Associate VISTA

The Garfield Park Community Council (GPCC) is a community-building organization made up of dedicated residents and allies working together to develop leaders and create opportunities and programs that build a vital Garfield Park community. The Communications Associate VISTA Member will work on a variety of outreach projects, including press releases, flyers, mailings, annual reports, as well as social media posts and website content. Additionally, the VISTA will assist with writing grant proposals and reports, building the capacity of the GPCC’s development department. Finally, the VISTA will help develop and revise digital outreach methods through the use of a CRM system, so that more residents in Garfield Park are aware of healthy and affordable housing resources and programs that build health and wellness in the neighborhood. The VISTA will be supervised by the Director of Development and Communications, with support from the Housing Specialist and Executive Director. Strong writing skills, attention to detail, and basic graphic design or project management skills are preferred. Garfield Park is a primarily and historically African American community, and the Garfield Park Community Council seeks VISTA members who display a commitment to racial equity and inclusion. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Member Duties : 1. Review the history and scope of the GPCC’s housing and communications programs, and related wellness and resident organizing programs, as well as city-wide initiatives and adjacent partnerships. 2. Work with the Director of Development and Communications to develop a workplan and timeline for unique and ongoing communications projects related to housing and related wellness initiatives with input from program staff members. 3. Collaborate with GPCC staff on outreach and implementation of communication materials to advertise current programs, providing support for digital literacy programs necessary for virtual or web-based programs. 4. Collect and record information of individuals interested in housing programs to help the GPCC more effectively communicate opportunities. 5. Build the GPCC’s capacity to reach more neighborhood residents with healthy, safe, and affordable housing by assisting with fundraising, including the development of proposals and reports.
