2020 Outreach VISTA Summer Associate

Garfield Park Community Council (GPCC) is a community-building organization working to improve housing opportunities in Garfield Park, a neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side that has experienced decades of disinvestment. GPCC currently offers housing counseling, works to reoccupy vacant homes through the Micro Market Recovery Program (MMRP), and recently purchased and preserved 40 units of affordable senior housing. The goal of this project is to integrate and expand our housing and wellness programs, researching policy and funding opportunities while developing evaluation and communication materials and tools. This position will work on a variety of outreach projects, including press releases, flyers, mailings, social media posts and website content, working with the Director of Development and Communications. Additionally, the VISTA will help develop and revise digital outreach methods through the use of a CRM system, so that more residents in Garfield Park are aware of healthy and affordable housing resources. In effect, this VISTA project will increase affordable housing opportunities and interrupt the cycle of poverty on Chicago’s West Side. This position will be supervised by the Director of Development and Communications, with support from the Housing Specialist and Executive Director. Strong writing skills, attention to detail, and basic graphic design or project management skills are preferred. Garfield Park is a primarily and historically African American community, and the Garfield Park Community Council seeks VISTA members who display a commitment to racial equity and inclusion. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program at Housing Action’s website.
