'20-'21 Food Drives Coordinator VISTA, UWTC

Thurston County Food Bank (TCFB) provides groceries to 50,000+ families & individuals annually. Our mission is to eliminate hunger in our community, in the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor. We engage thousands of volunteers to support our work, distribute food to 70+ locations, and rescue millions of pounds of fresh food from grocers & food distribution centers. We provide a no-barrier service that makes it possible for those experiencing hunger to receive groceries free of charge. A vital part of our operation is our Food Drives program. Although food banks distribute more fresh and frozen foods today than ever before, dry and canned staples such as peanut butter, cereal, grains, legumes, and quick meals are always a necessity for clients. Although food banks can and do purchase shelf-stable items in bulk to stretch their dollars, food drives bring many advantages that buying in bulk misses. Food drives bring more variety and items that meet special dietary needs. Food drives also bring a fun, engaging, hands-on opportunity for community members of all ages to help those in need. For many people, their one interaction and exposure to their local food bank takes place when their business, school, faith organization, or club organizes a food drive. TCFB is fortunate to have a thriving grassroots network of individuals and groups who organize food drives on our behalf. However, there is much work to be done to better support, coordinate, and communicate with this network. When donors receive fast follow-up on pickup requests and feel thanked, acknowledged and appreciated, their food drives are much more likely to grow and become a repeat occasion. The VISTA will be a member of the Greater South Sound VISTA team, made up of 19 other VISTA members and supported by the VISTA Leader, who coordinates professional development opportunities, provides individualized support and resources, and supports the program’s success.
