The International Institute of St. Louis (IISTL) is our community’s immigrant service and information hub. Our programs and services for immigrants, their families, and the wider community are locally and nationally-acclaimed. We connect new arrivals with first-touch services and resources, engage foreign-born and the wider community, and build a more inclusive community.The International Institute of Metro St . Louis has for over 100 years served the St. Louis foreign-born community. The mission is to build a more connected and productive society to benefit immigrants, their families, and the wider community. Serving at the International Institute of St. Louis provides a wide variety of experiences and opportunities for growth. During the 11-month program, a total of 6 AmeriCorps State Members will be serving in various capacities at the agency. Along with providing direct services to newly arrived refugees from various countries and ethnicities, Members will actively participate in annual agency events such as the Festival of Nations and assist with volunteer recruitment activities. Member training will include an initial orientation, CPR/First Aid certification, disaster preparedness/response, professional development, Life-After AmeriCorps, the Show-Me Conference and more. Members will also serve the greater St. Louis community through service days such as MLK Day. Speaking a language used by clients is not a requirement, but can be helpful.

Member Duties : Serving clients with special needs, the SOCIAL WORK DEPT. AmeriCorps will assist clients in scheduling medical appointments, arranging transportation, accompanying clients to appointments, providing support and assistance advocating for clients with service providers. The Member will teach clients how to utilize public transportation, advocate for themselves at appointments, refill and obtain medications and access community services and resources. Member will also help with Elderly Services activities and events. Having a degree in Social Work is not a requirement for this position. Need regular access to a car and willingness to transport clients. Estimated time driving related to serve: 6 HOURS PER WEEK. Level of client contact: HIGH. Part-time employment allowed as long as work hours are well outside of service hours.
