*MTCC Summer VISTA Evergreen Kids Corner Preschool

Evergreen Kids Corner Cooperative is a preschool for both children and their families. We are a co-op, which means that each family has to be committed to creating an enriching and safe learning environment for their child through participation. We offer programming year-round, including an academic year program for children ages 2-pre-kindergarten and summer camps geared toward younger kids to help them maintain school readiness skills acquired during the academic year. We endeavor to provide an environment that promotes active exploration and interaction with adults, other children and materials, with the teacher as a facilitator. It is an unfortunate trend that children from low-income communities often arrive at the kindergarten door substantially behind children from higher-income communities with greater resources and early education opportunities. This gap in school readiness receives much less attention than it should in a rural and resource-scarce community like the Bitterroot Valley; Children who enter school lagging far behind don't usually catch up. These children are less likely to have the early educational support that is so crucial for the development of their knowledge and skills. To fight poverty, preschool must and can provide an enormous early boost that changes the academic trajectory of a child forever – by not only supporting the child, but their caregiver as well. Our project, with support of private foundations, is able to offer summer camps at low or no cost to families making it accessible to families who would otherwise not have summer school readiness opportunities in a supportive and community-oriented environment. The goal of this program is to prepare preschool aged children with the school readiness skills they need to be successful when entering Kindergarten. A secondary goal of this project is to promote family engagement in the education process.

Member Duties : Summer Explorers camps are fun, engaging half-day programs designed to enrich young children and promote school readiness during summer break. Camps run Monday through Thursday, and each day of camp includes adult-led activities, snack time, and indoor and outdoor free play. Programs are offered for children ages 2 and up. The summer associate will assist with Summer Explorers camps daily functions. To increase community engagement efforts, the VISTA will develop an outreach campaign to improve access and inclusion to families outside of Hamilton and surrounding communities. The VISTA will increase community volunteer engagement by recruiting and training volunteers to assist in developing camp programming. To identify whether goals and objectives were met and in what ways the VISTA will develop evaluation metrics and instruments. The VISTA will track participants, engagement, and learning objectives and report on progress.
