Austin Public Health Data Coordinator VISTA Year 2
 
 
 
Within the Austin Public Health Department, the VISTA will utilize the newly established departmental structure for organizing open data work while making improvements. They'll educate and train designated new & current Data Coordinators and Data Stewards on how to prepare datasets for publication and how to publish to the data portal. They'll support the work for open data and its value within and outside the department by demonstrating how visualization and business intelligence tools can lead to actionable insights and understanding. They'll identify metrics and create the process to assess the progress of divisions within the department on publishing datasets. To increase health outcomes and subsequent effects on economic opportunity, the VISTA will create plans for community organizations to utilize public health data to inform program decisions. They'll create a framework for APH open data training, create channels for sharing health research and data with external partners, and ngage with newly emerging departmental and city level initiatives aimed at establishing open data governance, data quality standards, and other efforts to facilitate greater internal-external data sharing. Finally, the VISTA will optimize Austin Public Health’s open data structure and assessment tool by soliciting feedback from City employees and external partners about all facets of Austin Public Health’s open data work and how it can be improved. They'll survey target communities to ensure the open data process meets their needs, and work with other City open data programs, including the Neighborhood Housing Data VISTA, to learn their methods and develop best practices. The VISTA will refine and expand the data gathering processes, assessment tool, and training materials.
