*MTCC Summer VISTA Zootown Arts Community Center

The Zootown Arts Community Center is a nonprofit art center providing accessible arts experiences for all through education, exhibitions, and events. Children living in low-income circumstances have very limited access to quality arts education at the time in their lives that cultivating creativity is most vital. Research shows that youth who are regularly exposed to arts programs and have an opportunity to connect to their community are more likely to stay in school and pursue higher education thus changing their socio-economic status. The ZACC's summer program aids in increasing graduation rates for Missoula youth by serving low-income students and by fostering frequent arts participation, which leads to improved grades and standardized test scores, reduced dropout rates and boredom in school, and a healthier self-image (Catterall, 1997). These results correlate to increased civic engagement, and the National Endowment for the Arts reports students of the arts are more than twice as likely to volunteer in their communities than are students with little arts participation.

Member Duties : Summer Associate will help mentor over 300 youth in over 25 summer art programs at the Zootown Arts Community Center. Programs are designed to build confidence, foster creativity, and build strong relationships with the community, all things that are proven to increase youth's chances at pursuing a college education. During their term of service, the VISTA will provide college and high-school students with meaningful service and community engagement activities. As it is the main focus of the summer programs, the VISTA will Address Summer Learning Loss and K-12 Student Success by creating learning opportunities for students throughout the summer by assisting in ZACC's summer education programs. The VISTA will also alleviate poverty by mentoring and supporting at least 25 low income students in our summer youth programs.
