*MTCC Summer VISTA Stevens Youth Center
The Stevens Youth Center (SYC) has been operated by local 501(c)3 nonprofit, Youth, Inc for two decades. The SYC offers support to families through an afterschool and summer program. The summer program focuses on the same areas our school year program does, expanding on the learning that happens during the day at school. We do what we can to help prevent the summer learning loss that often occurs. By offering free summer programs and scholarships for those that cannot afford to pay for the programs that carry a fee, the Stevens Youth Center helps working families. Increasing the summer program hours and offerings will help ensure less summer learning loss as well as give parents the peace of mind of knowing that their child is in a safe, supportive environment without stretching their already tight resources. We have worked with other organizations (churches, library, etc) to ensure that their Vacation Bible School, Summer Reading, and other programs occur at different hours from our summer program when possible. Thereby offering youth opportunities that run back to back and not in competition with each other. Summer Reading is offered one afternoon per week and there are a handful of churches that run a week-long VBS program, again in the afternoons. As we increase programming we will continue to work with these organizations to ensure that families have options for keeping their kids busy, safe, and learning all day. The library's Summer Reading program and our program specifically aid in the prevention of summer learning loss. The goal of this project is to close the summer learning gap by providing robust summer learning experiences for the economically disadvantaged youth in Meagher County. Services will be offered free to those that can't afford them, thereby giving low-income and low-performing students access to quality summer educational opportunities.
