UG: Summer Associate: Urban Revitalization Analyst

Join the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas AmeriCorps VISTA Program. The Unified Government (UG) has made a commitment to civic innovation, job creation, economic development, and the health of Wyandotte County residents - and our members are contributing in big ways! Illegal dumping and littering are a pervasive problem in Wyandotte County neighborhoods and decrease the quality of life for residents, especially when it comes to the safety and appearance of the community. The Unified Government has been working to address complex issues such as this for the last few years through the neighborhood revitalization SOAR Initiative (Stabilization, Occupation, and Revitalization), but 2020 is the first time that illegal dumping will be comprehensively addressed. SOAR created a team with representatives from over 15 departments to tackle this issue – Illegal Dumping & Litter Elimination (IDLE). The Summer Associates will work as a pair to assist in IDLE’s efforts by analyzing and adding to data, mapping dumping locations, coordinating cleanup efforts among departments, and creating a promotional campaign. The ideal candidate is a team player who is willing to learn and passionate about using data to drive decision-making. Experience in simple data analysis (recognizing patterns) and mapping (using GIS software) is preferred, but the Unified Government can provide GIS training to the right candidate as well. The ability to collaborate with staff from multiple departments and residents of varying backgrounds is essential. Kansas City, Kansas is a very diverse community. The ability to speak Spanish or another language often spoken in KCK (Burmese, Hmong, etc.) is preferred, but not required. The candidate should have a valid driver’s license. They do not need their own vehicle but might be asked to drive a Unified Government vehicle for data collection. Please note that this VISTA can work remotely if necessary due to COVID-19.
