E3.20 Northeast RSDP Low Income Housing VISTA

The Northeast Regional Sustainable Development Partnership (NERSDP) is a unique citizen empowered experiment within Extension to create and increase cross-pollination between communities. With the NERSDP and UMN Design Lab, VISTA member will focus on Resilient Communities to work on building more just, equitable and sustainable housing in this regional collaborative, design/research, pilot project. The community engagement aspect of the project will further develop the low income housing network and further the goals of strengthening communication, coordination, people to people exchanges in partnership with all involved. This whole-community systems and partnerships approach will attempt to bring together the many different individuals, communities and organizations working separately on this issues. This VISTA position will provide this project a regional “point person” offering continuity between the institutions/organizations and the communities helping to create a statewide collaborative design/research pilot project that will co-develop affordable and resilient housing solutions across the state. The project will utilize both universal technological solutions developed by researchers as well as place specific design innovations developed with communities. The goal of this project is to create a set of shareable housing solutions that take advantage of Minnesota's ecologic, economic, and cultural diversity. Communities across the state all face unique challenges, but together we also share the need for more affordable and more sustainable housing. All housing designs will be documented and undergo planning review by the State of Minnesota. Permit-ready plans for the different projects will be made available to the public to facilitate implementation by communities across the state. The VISTA member will be one of 24 Ecolibrium3 VISTA cohort members, and will jointly complete one community service project of their cooperative design.
