CCNYPA DeSales University VISTA

The VISTA will develop a sustainable Attendance Ambassador program for the Allentown School district. The VISTA will do this by forming a recruitment plan and relationships in the University to form an Ambassador team of students that will be work-studies, interns, or regular weekly volunteers. The VISTA will take part in Attendance Team Meetings to develop the specific needs for each school and the children at risk of slipping into attendance truancy. The VISTA will assist DeSales in observing the Ambassador team for capacity enhancement, enhance opportunities for small groups of students, to provide them a space to develop their goals, discuss challenges of coming and staying in school, and discuss support systems needed to help them succeed. For example, DeSales students have been able to raise money to purchase bus tickets for students who live 1.5-2 miles for school (Allentown is a walking district). And this year, the team developed calendars to work on students’ time management skills. Each school has 3 groups of students that DeSales students meet twice a week for one hour; with the goal to improve each child’s attendance, to only miss 5-10 days of school throughout the year. The VISTA will work closely with the school’s Attendance Coordinator to track each child’s absences and academic results to measure the success of the Ambassador program.
