Macalester College VISTA, IA & MN Campus Compact

Macalester College is a residential liberal arts college in St. Paul, MN. The college mission of service to society and supporting diversity fuels the well-established Civic Engagement Center. Urban Roots is a longtime community partner with Macalester through their work on food related youth programming in a low-income community. This initiative will connect the dots between environmental justice, poverty reduction and public health. Our VISTA’s work will address the issues of hunger and engage a college students to become empowered to work on equitable food access. The VISTA will be part of our larger Civic Engagement Center team and thus learn about civic engagement in higher education and community-based work at nonprofits. The VISTA will have responsibility for the recruitment of culturally diverse student volunteers and creating an infrastructure for a dynamic food justice program. This project is part of the Community Corps VISTA Program, operated by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact. The program strives to eliminate poverty through campus-community partnerships by placing full-time capacity building support in nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions. There are three focus areas, this project being in the Health Corps, which supports sites in long-term approaches to the social determinants of health. This includes meeting low-income student needs and a variety of projects with health-focused community organizations. ***Please also send cover letter and resume to supervisor . Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.***
