Southwest Minnesota State University VISTA

Southwest Minnesota State University prepares students to meet the complex challenges of this century as engaged citizens in their local and global communities. Minnesota West Community and Technical College prepares learners for a lifetime of success. The project goal is to improve health, wellness, & student success of low-income and underrepresented students by increasing students’ access to emergency food and awareness of basic needs resources. This project focuses on increasing health education around food insecurity by expanding partnerships and bringing educational resources to students. This project will work with key current partners and work to establish new partnerships. Specific objectives include: 1. Identify ways to continue to respond to hunger and basic needs at SMSU through the established Mustang Market, food and resource pantry, and other initiatives. 2. Identify ways to respond to hunger needs at Minnesota West campuses and learning center. 3. Increase low-income students’ and students of color’s experience of an inclusive campus and community environment by furthering linkages between SMSU, Minnesota West, and the communities served to nutrition access efforts. This project is part of the Community Corps VISTA Program, operated by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact. The program strives to eliminate poverty through campus-community partnerships by placing full-time capacity building support in nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions. There are three focus areas, this project being in the Health Corps, which supports sites in long-term approaches to the social determinants of health. This includes meeting low-income student needs and a variety of projects with health-focused community organizations. ***Please also send cover letter and resume to supervisor . Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.***
