Normandale Community College is a vibrant, exciting, and diverse community that helps students to succeed and realize their potential. Our mission is to advance individuals’ intellectual, career, and personal development by providing outstanding teaching and support. We serve over 14,000 students across our region through both on-campus and online learning, as well as having robust support services available to students. The position will reside within the Department of Student Life and will be supervised by the Director of Student Life. The goals of this position are to: • Increase students’ access to fresh produce and healthy food options on campus through campus refrigeration, partners to provide fresh produce, and evaluation of food rescue options • Establish an ongoing program or partnership to address student needs for healthcare, including creating a proposal to address this need and helping to build campus capacity to meet this need • Plan and create a peer-to-peer program to help current students help other students meet their basic needs and raise awareness of available resources This project is part of the Community Corps VISTA Program, operated by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact. The program strives to eliminate poverty through campus-community partnerships by placing full-time capacity building support in nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions. There are three focus areas, this project being in the Health Corps, which supports sites in long-term approaches to the social determinants of health. This includes meeting low-income student needs and a variety of projects with health-focused community organizations.

Member Duties : This position will increase Normandale students’ access to fresh produce and healthy food by assessing options for campus refrigeration and distribution, establishing relationships with partners to secure food, exploring and building capacity for a food rescue program, and developing a sustainable food rescue initiative. They will also develop an ongoing program and partnership to meet student healthcare needs by researching possible community partners, creating a proposal to meet student healthcare needs, and by developing the necessary infrastructure to ensure success. In addition, they will train at least 200 staff and faculty about meeting students’ basic needs, while setting up a peer-to-peer program that students can utilize to meet their basic needs. This program will train current students on how to help other students access resources, get enrolled in benefits, and help spread the word about the resource center on campus.
