Community Outreach VISTA at Gonzaga University (Year 2)

Gonzaga University is a private, Jesuit university in Spokane, Washington. Gonzaga’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE) provides opportunities for students to engage in meaningful service that addresses critical community issues through one-time and ongoing projects that will break the cycle of poverty by addressing issues such as educational access, economic disparity, food insecurity, homelessness, and communities on the margin. In order to increase community impact and concentrate our engagement efforts, we are developing a place-based initiative focused on the neighborhoods in Northeast Spokane adjacent to the Gonzaga campus. This AmeriCorps VISTA project supports the development and implementation phases of the place-based initiative, called ONE (Opportunity Northeast). It will build on collective action efforts in our community and leverage CCE’s history of developing strong reciprocal partnerships with the surrounding community and local schools. The project will involve Gonzaga students, staff, and faculty in the expansion of community engagement efforts in Northeast Spokane that 1) promote the educational access and success of grade P-12 at-risk youth, 2) increase access to nutritional food for individuals and families, and 3) increase community capacity of residents and organizations. Benefits include $479 biweekly living allowance. VISTA Members who successfully complete the year receive their choice of either a Segal Education Award (valued at approximately $6,195) or an $1,800 cash stipend. AmeriCorps VISTA is also the only AmeriCorps program where you can earn federal non-competitive eligibility, giving you an edge in the federal hiring process. Gonzaga University will provide an ID card, allowing access to the university library and gym as well as a free bus pass.
