University of Pennsylvania Netter Center - CCNYPA

The Career Readiness Employment Bank and Council Program will build on measures to sustain the current Internship Program as well as contribute to the development of an Employment Council that is composed of community members, local businesses and after-school Netter Center staff with the goal to assist in finding and placing students into internship positions. The Vista Project will work with West Philadelphia and Sayre public University-Assisted Community High Schools to continue the current Internship to Employment programming. The program will expand these current efforts of implementation by aligning multiple resources needed to prepare students for internship placement in both the surrounding community as well as within the University. 2020-2021 will primarily be focused on continuing to grow and institutionalize the Vista projects to become a fully sustainable program within the Netter Center. Additionally, this project is designed to meet the needs of students in West Philadelphia. These needs include a deficit in workforce, placed-based experience, short-term and practical experiences as well as job training needed to learn about careers, develop networks, and build experience in the workplace at the schools. This project will address the lack of access to community based employers and local internship opportunities.

Member Duties : The Netter Center VISTA will continue to focus on refining the current internship commitments and will work to engage with stakeholders to participate in school-based employment councils and resource recruitment plans for an employment bank. Additionally the VISTA will help to create an infrastructure to sustain and establish the project as an institutionalized Netter Center Core Program offering that will extend beyond the completion of the conclusion of the project. The VISTA will also work to strengthen the community by providing volunteers from various Penn departments who will be able to support and assist during school instruction hours as well as the extended day period to promote college and career exploration and support the development of work readiness skill building in students.
