Opportunity Council - EWRRC Youth Development Summer VISTA

In the northwest corner of Washington State, the Columbia Valley Urban Growth Area, a rural food desert, is home to 4-5 thousand individuals. Of the 394 students enrolled in the nearby Kendall Elementary School, 75% are low income and qualify for free or reduced lunch and breakfasts (WA OSPI 2019/2020 report card). The Summer VISTA will help design and execute a summer youth program by engaging with non-profit partners, volunteers, and onsite staff. During the 6-8 program weeks we provide breakfast and lunch Monday through Thursday, along with fun, educational activities to prevent summer learning loss for 70-120 children with an average of 24 children per day and a typical ration of one adult for every 7 youth. This program exists due to food scarcity which becomes a graver issue for children during school breaks when parents must still work and they may not be able to access healthy meals or food they can safely prepare at home. The Summer Kids Days program teaches youth cooking skills and acts as a safe place for Summer fun as well as a meal program.
