M:STL-St. Francis Xavier College Church Communications VISTA

St. Francis Xavier College Church’s Social Ministry is the service and justice arm of the Catholic parish on Saint Louis University’s campus. Social Ministry works to fill unmet needs of people experiencing poverty and homelessness, specifically through our ID and Birth Certificate Program and our Xavier Winter Inn emergency shelter. Our ID and Birth Certificate Program, the cornerstone of our Social Ministry, began in 1993 and offers twice-weekly walk-in hours to facilitate access to Missouri State ID cards and birth certificates. Volunteers work one-on-one with low-income program guests to overcome financial and logistical barriers to obtaining IDs and/or birth certificates. These documents are needed for employment, housing, social services, and a host of other resources; people with low incomes and limited resources face both financial and logistical challenges to obtaining official identification. In 2018, the ID and Birth Certificate Program served 3,281 program guests, assisting with 2,396 Missouri State ID cards and 2,726 birth certificates, of which 976 were for children under 16. Xavier Winter Inn began in 2011 as part of a larger network of emergency winter shelters with a goal of providing hospitality and a warm place to stay to people experiencing homelessness. Over the most recent winter from 2018-2019, Winter Inn provided emergency shelter to 126 men over 9 nights. Both of these programs work with people with low incomes who are often experiencing homelessness. The ID and Birth Certificate Program also commonly works with people who were recently incarcerated.
