Austin Public Library VISTA Summer Associate

In order to increase the equitability of high-quality summer programming and achievement gaps in literacy, the Summer Associates will promote summer learning for youth coming to the Central Library from under-served populations (summer camps, summer school programs, families with limited income, families on social assistance, homeless families, and immigrant families). Summer Associates will encourage summer learning by assisting with or planning events that make a positive connection between kids and reading and the Library. Activities include: •Inviting participation in summer reading games with educational prizes•Providing daily hands-on STEM-based activities•Hosting summer camp/summer school field trips to the Library•Helping with scavenger hunts that encourage kids to explore the library through play•Facilitate learning through art events, board game events, chess games•Facilitate kids’ abilities to teach others what they know by assisting with Minecraft online play •Creating displays of popular materials or topics that make discovery easy •Collaborating with Youth Staff to offer 3D printing and virtual reality events•Offering workforce development learning opportunities by working alongside summer teen interns and volunteers, including supervised mentoring VISTA Summer Associates will also collect demographic data on all summer learning program participants to ensure the programs are reaching the intended audiences. In order to provide opportunities for arts programming in under served communities the Summer Associates will work with community partner Austin Symphony to carry out free arts programming to youth. Summer Associates will coordinate outreach and awareness about summer music programming using the engagement plan to increase low income participation created in previous objective. Summer Associates will assist library staff in carrying out programming, increasing capacity to engage under-served participants in exploring library opportunities.
