Stewards VISTA: Kentucky Headwaters, Inc.

Headwaters Inc. is a non-profit community watershed organization in Letcher County, Kentucky. In response to water-quality concerns, community members formed Headwaters in 2005 to promote local water resource management and encourage stewardship of Letcher County waterways. After incorporation, Headwaters gained 501(c)3 nonprofit status in 2008. Since the founding of the organization, Headwaters has been led by an operating board of professionals from various parts of the county. Today, Headwaters works to address public health issues relating to water quality through water monitoring, environmental education, and ecological restoration. Our specific program activities include sampling stream water at designated locations throughout the year, conducting in-home tap water testing in partnership with the University of Kentucky, and community engagement through Letcher County school system and in partnership with other local nonprofits around clean water issues. Headwaters also holds regular stream cleanups and supports Headwaters on the Creek Summer Camp at Cowan Community Center, which serves under-resourced local youth and families. The Community Program Coordinator VISTA member will work to this end by developing and maintaining Headwaters community programming relating to these topics. The VISTA member will recruit, train, and work with a volunteer base for conducting programming; plan and execute environmental education in local schools; assist in development and fundraising activities; and assist in partner-led work as needed. This project will engage community members in citizen monitoring activities, empower youth through education on water health, and collaborate with ecoutourism efforts as a means for increasing community knowledge and public safety in a region with low levels of environmental education.

Member Duties : VISTA will be tasked with utilizing our education programming to build awareness around water quality needs and opportunities and engage community members in ongoing stewardship activities. VISTA will be responsible for coordinating Headwaters’ ongoing environmental education programming in the Letcher County School System, as well as its community-wide public educational offerings. VISTA will conduct regular class visits to deliver water ecology curriculum and skills training to local students, maintain existing relationships and build new relationships with area educators, and plan and execute summer camps. Headwaters manages multiple volunteer programs focused on building a sense of community responsibility and skills training in caring for our local waterways. Increasing Headwaters’ base to scale up the impact of our current stewardship activities and ecotourism efforts will be a core component of the VISTA’s responsibilities.
