UGA VISTA 2020 UGArden Summer Associate

UGArden is a student-run farm located near the main University of Georgia campus in Athens, GA. Student volunteers help manage and provide the primary labor to grow ~4 acres of vegetables, fruits, shiitake mushrooms and herbs using organic practices. The mission of UGArden is to build a community of students centered on a sustainable food system. UGArden's goals are: 1) to teach students to grow food using organic practices; 2) to share healthy, sustainably grown food with members of the local community, particularly those in poverty; 3) to engage students in the local community through service-learning; and 4) to provide opportunities for students to learn practical skills and experiment with new ideas. UGArden participates in and supports many community projects in an effort to reach out to the needs of the local community. UGArden supports the efforts of local middle school gardens (also supported by VISTAs). Much of the produce grown at UGArden is distributed to families in need in the Athens area through programs such as UGA’s Campus Kitchen, the Athens Community Council on Aging, the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia and UGA’s on-campus food pantry.
