Simpson Housing - Culturally Relevant Curriculum (LitMN)

Simpson Housing Services mission is to house, support, and advocate for people experiencing homelessness. We offer shelter programs for individuals and supportive housing for single adults, families with children, and unaccompanied youth. As a member of our Children and Youth Services Department, the Literacy Leader will join a strengths-focused team of youth workers partnering with parents to break the generational cycle of homelessness by supporting their children’s academic success, stability, and wellbeing. Homelessness is rooted in part in historical trauma and systemic racism, and many of the children we serve are children of color. People of color are consistently underserved by an education system that marginalizes, devalues, and/or ignores their culture, history, and experiences, which has a detrimental impact on their learning. On the other hand, young people of color who have access to rich, culturally responsive environments and learning experiences regularly achieve stronger academic outcomes. The Literacy Leader will make a difference in the lives of children and families transitioning out of homelessness by designing meaningful, culturally relevant literacy curriculum for use in our programs for elementary learners. The ideal candidate will be a flexible problem-solver with a passion for relationships, racial justice, and youth literacy. BIPOC individuals and individuals with lived experience of homelessness encouraged to apply. Simpson Housing Services is a leader in the housing field. The Literacy Leader have access to professional development opportunities, professional mentors, and a robust professional network of housing and youth workers.
