Arts In Reach Program Research and Development VISTA

AIR programs serve at-risk and lower-income teenage girls ages 13 to 22 from 22 communities in the Greater Seacoast region of New Hampshire. We provide 10 annual programs and transportation free of charge. Last year 70% of the teens we served used AIR transportation to access our programs, and we provided 200 placements for 76 teens from Rockingham and Strafford Counties. Close to 50% participated in multiple programs. All our programs take place after-school, on weekends, and during school vacations when teens are most vulnerable to engaging in high-risk behaviors such as poor self-image, bullying, substance use, and suicide ideation. The teens we serve are primarily from counties, which have high substance misuse rates. We often serve teens from children’s homes, homeless shelters, or who are couch surfing due to dysfunctional family situations. Many AIR teens live in housing authorities and overcrowded homes. Teens often come to AIR feeling as if they do not belong anywhere and with very low self-esteem. Most of the teens who enter our programs suffer from anxiety and depression, bullying at school or online, and social isolation. They often feel friend-less and hopeless. Of all FY2019 AIR participants, 90% experienced metal health challenges (70% anxiety and/or depression). Over 25% faced learning disabilities and chronic health conditions. Nearly 40% had multiple diagnoses. Additionally, closed to 40% received Free- or-Reduced Lunch; 30% came from households earning less than $35,000; and over 30% lived with single parents (90% female). AIR programs blend visual, literary, and performing arts education and mentoring with professional artists and staff, who co-design and co-lead all program sessions. Our programs give teens a safe space and consistent community where they are accepted and valued, giving them the support they desperately need. AIR teens would not have access to the arts and supportive mentoring without us.

Member Duties : The 2020-2021 Program Research and Development VISTA member will work with the Program Director to grow our programs in quantity, quality, and effectiveness. As AIR launches its 2020 five-year strategic plan, we will continue to expand in terms of staff and services. The need for efficient, sustainable tools, practices, and protocols has become increasingly apparent. This work will include developing systems for and maintaining program supplies, collecting impact data, and documenting program practices. This effort also includes working with AIR’s Program Director and Program Manager to develop more effective and efficient teen recruitment and referral systems. In this way, AIR will better serve current participants and leverage these new streamlined systems as we work to expand our reach. The VISTA will also assist the Program Director and Program Manager develop new program outreach tools and provide expanded collaborations and community services.
