Community Action Center, IA & MN Campus Compact

For over 50 years, Community Action Center of Northfield (CAC) has provided basic needs support for families throughout the Northfield, MN area. Specifically, in 2019 CAC is focusing on food systems and our role in developing deeper and more integrated community impact around food access for families. Northfield’s community of organic farms, CSA’s, and Cooperatives are interested in potential collaborative partnerships, but CAC has lacked the capacity to explore these new systems and partnerships. 90% of our clients report that they would like healthier fruit and vegetable options. This information is stretching the capacity of the organization to innovatively invest in new and collaborative approaches to addressing the needs of our clients. The work and focus of the VISTA will build CAC’s capacity to provide healthier food options and easier access to this food for low-income families through both community engagement and volunteer support. CAC’s VISTA will work primarily in three, successively capacity-building roles, for the benefit of low income families: 1) volunteer support, 2) healthier and more sustainable food sources, and 3) easier access to food supports. This project is part of the Community Corps VISTA Program, operated by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact. The program strives to eliminate poverty through campus-community partnerships by placing full-time capacity building support in nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions. There are three focus areas, this project being in the Health Corps, which supports sites in long-term approaches to the social determinants of health. This includes meeting low-income student needs and a variety of projects with health-focused community organizations. ***Please also send cover letter and resume to supervisor . Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.***
