Summer Reads - St Cloud Great River Regional Library (LitMN)

Great River Regional Library (GRRL) system provides library services and literacy opportunities in 32 branch locations. Each year GRRL holds a themed Summer Reading Program for youth. St. Cloud branch provides free lunches to an average of 60 kids, five days a week during the summer. The library is one of many lunch sites in St. Cloud and, with its downtown location, draws children from throughout the city. Data show that over 34% of children under five in St. Cloud live under the poverty level and over 10% of the community is foreign-born, with 13% speaking a language other than English. Both people in poverty and those new to America have unique literacy needs, and an education opportunity gap exists when those needs are not met. GRRL is committed to addressing the unique literacy needs of people in poverty as well as those new to America, and works with community partners focused on closing the opportunity gap. In Summer Reads, Mentors will serve this unique and diverse community, providing engaging activities meant to both prevent the summer slide and address the opportunity gap. Using resources available through the library, Mentors will hone their creative planning skills by creating their own curriculum or activities for children who come to the library for the summer reading program and lunches. Mentors will help improve literacy outcomes for children living in poverty in the St. Cloud area. Mentors will be provided training and have opportunities for professional growth. Applicants should have a passion for working with children and be excited to provide literacy experiences. *Positions are part of Literacy Minnesota’s Summer Reads program, which trains and places 60 AmeriCorps VISTA members as K-5 children’s literacy mentors in schools, libraries and out-of-school-time programs. About half of members serve outside the Twin Cities metro.
