Summer Reads - Mankato Youth Place - Mankato, MN (LitMN)

Mankato Youth Place (MY Place) opened its doors in October 2018 and quickly exceeded its long range goal in terms of the number of kids it set out to serve. Since that time we have continued to grow in number and in the amount of opportunities we provide to our members. During the summer months we set out to have FUN, continue to bring opportunities to the kids we serve and ensure that they do not lose ground academically. Many of our members’ demographics are similar to those the school district identifies as least likely to graduate. At the start of summer 2019 we assessed math and reading abilities of our members and found the majority to be well below grade level. We work hard to be a space outside of school that demonstrates the importance of learning to our members. Summer Reads Mentors will join our team of staff, volunteers and community partners to improve our members’ academic outcomes. We do this through multiple avenues. The first is by providing a safe place where kids can build healthy relationships with adults, have nutritional needs met along with other basic needs such as clothing, footwear and personal hygiene supplies. We believe that these needs must be met in order for our members to do their best during our academic times. We work on academics by offering homework help, math and literacy games, practice reading and writing, and offer creative design and with projects like puppet shows. Our leadership places a high value on empowering team members. This is done through connecting them to mentors, future opportunities and by giving them the opportunity to try new things. We welcome all team members to provide feedback that will improve outcomes for our members. We ask that all team members bring a spirit of flexibility to the organization. It is important that we adapt our environment as needed to best meet the needs of our members, families and team members. Additional benefits include: bus passes, lunch and career training.

Member Duties : Summer Reads Mentors will lead our literacy efforts using techniques and activities already in place and incorporating their own ideas to improve our members’ outcomes. All kids in our program are registered “members,” but not all attend each day. We target our academic programming towards a core group of daily attendees. Records of success and opportunities for improvement will be key to refining our program. *Members serve full-time, 40 hours per week, primarily Mon-Fri. Term of service is June 13–Aug 7. Orientation takes place virtually June 13-17, additional trainings on Fridays. Multiple positions available. Positions are part of Literacy Minnesota’s Summer Reads program, which places 60 members in schools, libraries and community programs statewide. Literacy MN fosters an organizational culture that is welcoming and inclusive to all. Applications reviewed on a rolling basis. PRIORITY to applications BEFORE April 29. https://www.literacymn.org/americorps-vista
