2020-2021 Resident Engagement Coordinator VISTA

The VISTA will serve Heartland Housing’s Resident Services Department in two affordable housing buildings on the north side of Chicago. The VISTA’s role is to identify resident leaders and help develop their leadership capacity in order to build opportunities for participation in their community and the issues that affect them. Heartland Alliance advances the human rights and responds to the human needs of endangered populations—particularly the poor, the isolated, and the displaced—through the provision of comprehensive and respectful services and the promotion of permanent solutions leading to a more just global society. Heartland Housing is a community housing development organization within Heartland Alliance that facilitates the development of people through the preservation and creation of affordable and supportive housing, with a priority in meeting the needs of homeless persons and families, very low-income individuals, and persons with chronic disabilities. The VISTA will: develop resident leadership skills and opportunities in three main areas of activity: volunteer activity, building opportunities for access to and investment in community resources, and engagement in surrounding community. The VISTA will increase the activity and leadership of the residents and build systems for these activities and leadership to be sustained after the term of service. Residents who were previously isolated, unstable in housing, or disengaged will become more active within their buildings and in their neighborhoods. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program at Housing Action’s website. This position can start in June, July, or August (talk with interviewer).
