2020 Youth Program VISTA Summer Associate
The mission of Centro Romero is to empower those with the fewest options in the immigrant and refugee community by developing and strengthening the family unit, fostering community leadership and providing quality social and adjustment services. Centro Romero is a community-based organization that has been serving the low-income Latino immigrant and refugee community on the northeast side of Chicago for 35 years. The need is below-grade levels of academic performance, especially reading comprehension for youths in grades 1-8. The VISTA summer project will address the need by providing expanded and more in-depth services to youth program participants in grades 1-4 or 5-8 and help them to achieve better outcomes. The goal is to have 50 program youth better prepared for the next school year. The project will increase our ability to fight poverty by helping them to be better prepared for high school, college, and beyond. The ideal candidate will, have a working knowledge/experience about community organizations, youth development; possess good organization skills, verbal and written skills, and basic computer skills; be teamwork oriented; and interested in developing her/his leadership skills. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Member Duties : 1. Overall responsibilities include direct service in the summer session of the after-school program for children in grades 1-4 or 5-8. 2. Assist in the development and implementation of scheduling, delivery and evaluation of educational and social and emotional development services to participants. 3. Services include tutoring in academic subjects, literature circles, and informal peer counseling and mentoring in recreational, arts-based, and social programs.
