2020-2021 Downstate Illinois Fair Housing VISTA

HOPE Fair Housing Center works to create greater housing opportunities for all and ensure that everyone has the chance to live in the home of their choice free from discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, familial status, or any other characteristics protected under state or local laws. HOPE accomplishes this through education, outreach, enforcement, training, and advocacy. Because HOPE Fair Housing Center’s main office is in Wheaton, Illinois and limited resources, our main service area has been mostly in the northern half of the state. We have determined that there is a need for a more prominent presence of fair housing education, outreach, and services in southern and western Illinois. To determine best methods and practices for reaching and providing HOPE’s services to communities in southern and western Illinois we are seeking a VISTA to support HOPE in the expansion of another branch of our organization specifically focused on underserved communities in the southern and western portions of the state. The VISTA will research and implement outreach strategies to extend to low and mixed-income communities, so all residents have an equal opportunity to find and obtain safe, affordable housing. The VISTA will be responsible for the development of sustainable, efficient processes to stay connected to and build relationships with residents and organizations in downstate Illinois communities that may have never heard of HOPE. Candidates must have strong networking, relationship building, writing, researching, and comprehension skills for this position. Having a personal method of transportation is preferable, but not having a car will not exclude candidates. Fluency in English for this position is a must, however fluency in other languages, especially Spanish, is a bonus. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network and it can start in June, July, or August. Speak to your interviewer for more details.
