Shippensburg Youth Food Programs

Shippensburg University is partnering with Shippensburg Community Resource Coalition (SCRC) to provide year- round programs to reduce food insecurity in the Shippensburg Area School District (SASD). The SASD is a Title I school district except for one elementary school and has a poverty rate of 17.9% (American Community Survey, 2013-2017), higher than the statewide rate of 13.1%. In 2017 SCRC and a local church began a backpack program that gives students 7 meals and snacks over the weekends. The enrollment quickly increased from 15 students to over 85 students. The Summer Lunch Program (SLP) addresses food insecurity in the summer by providing breakfast, snacks, and lunch on weekdays at one of the elementary schools. SLP experienced sudden growth in 2019, averaging 60 youth compared to 40 youth in 2018. The VISTA position will focus on making these programs sustainable to last beyond the initial project and increased growth by seeking funding and other resources to help sustain the program. Shippensburg University’s Healthy Futures: Youth Food Security VISTA will be involved in several efforts to improve, bring awareness, and access of health and social services to Franklin and Cumberland Pennsylvania counties. Working with the SCRC and the SASD, the VISTA will be involved in organizing, outreach, research, information gathering, volunteer recruitment, and training related to helping the school district provide healthy meals over the weekends and summer months. The VISTA will ensure resources and sustainability are met by developing key partnerships within the schools, community, Central PA food bank, and other organizations in Franklin and Cumberland counties.

Member Duties : AmeriCorps VISTA would provide consistent service for the program and serve as a resource for connecting the program to food sources from within the community, through funding sources and coordinating volunteers from the Shippensburg University campus community. Information from the community needs assessment, which is conducted by the SCRC every few years, is used to determine what services the community feels is needed and where gaps may exist. From this assessment, which includes public forums, personal interviews, and focus groups, the voice of the populations to be served are heard. Currently, surveys are utilized to gather information from the students and parents of the students participating in the program. With the help of a CCNYPA*VISTA, the SCRC intends to hold meals with families to solicit feedback, and host focus groups with students as they work to transition this project over to the SASD.
