Nurse Family Partnership Legal Services
The VISTA will provide outreach, communications, and administrative support to the Nursing-Legal Partnership (NLP). The NLP is a collaborative based at the National Nurse-Led Care Consortium that focuses on improving maternal-child health outcomes for families in poverty. The three partners forming the NLP are: HELP: MLP (a legal aid program), Philadelphia Nurse-Family Partnership, and the Mabel Morris Family Home Visit Program (both maternal-child health nurse home-visiting programs). Through the NLP, nurse home visitors and attorneys work together to address health-harming legal needs through direct services, advocacy, and community education. The VISTA will be involved in this unique public health, nursing, and legal initiative that addresses social and structural determinants of health—the root causes of enduring and escalating poverty among young families in Philadelphia. These include housing instability, health-harming housing conditions, loss of public benefits and utilities, education and employment instability, challenges with legal status for immigrants, as well as family conflict and intimate partner violence (IPV). The VISTA will coordinate and expand the work of the NLP—both its client-facing services and its external civic engagement. The VISTA will seek out relationships and collaboration with other organizations addressing child poverty in Philadelphia in order to deepen client service and generate systems change. This will include supporting our “brunch and learn” series (trainings for home visitors in our program and throughout the region), as well as other training opportunities that deepen the impact of maternal-child health workers in Philadelphia. The VISTA will also research policy issues related to social determinants of health, as well as funding prospects for continued development of the NLP, its clients, and its long-term sustainability.
