CCMA "Affordable Housing in Prince George's County"

CKAR is leading partner with Kaiser Permanente in developing a Place-Based Initiative for Greater Riverdale. This work is supported by other partners such as Neighborhood Design Center and Maryland Nonprofits. This initiative includes efforts to lift residents in the Greater Riverdale community from poverty through end-to-end job training; identify housing opportunities to avoid their displacement through the development of affordable housing; and decrease stress factors in families through health and wellness programming. CKAR is developing The Sarvis Empowerment Cafe (under construction) that will offer a fresh-daily food menu, culinary arts training through our partnership with Prince George's Community College and job placement services. CKAR is a team member with and affordable housing developer that proposes to construct affordable housing for seniors, mixed income multi-story housing, and market rate townhomes along The Purple Line. Enterprise Community Partners completed an economic scan and assessment of the impact area. An important part of the program is the community's participation in developing a "Vision" for the twelve communities in Greater Riverdale. Current CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA members have been very successful with their efforts to engage the community. Together with our partners, CKAR will develop a thriving community through listening, as the community defines a "thriving community" that includes schools as a hub for health, support for small businesses, and fostering entrepreneurs, developing a tactical workforce, financial coaching and affordable housing.

Member Duties : The CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA member will support the Place-Based Initiative work of CKAR through continued collection of data, review of data, and analytics developed by VISTA members in 2019-2020, and a substantial contact database. The VISTA member in this assignment will assist us to successfully work with housing developers to meet community need; support the work of CKAR to increase the involvement of the community; assist in the development of programming for the patio of The Sarvis Empowerment Cafe to inform the community about housing issues; and to track CKAR culinary arts job placement services to identify those students that could benefit from the affordable housing programs along the corridor.
