2020-2021 Program and Research Specialist VISTA

The mission of Northwest Side Community Development Corporation is to provide the Northwest Side the tools and resources to preserve affordable housing and prevent displacement, and provide business development assistance to local businesses. The NWSCDC works to leverage resources for small businesses and affordable housing for Belmont Cragin. The goal of this project is to help residents escape poverty and secure housing they can afford. The VISTA will ensure that rental participants have long-term (12-month+) follow-up counseling, including referrals to other programs and services offered by NWSHC and NWSCDC. Additionally, the VISTA will conduct extensive research on affordable housing options and community development strategies that prevent displacement. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program at Housing Action’s website. This position can start in June, July, or August. Speak to your interviewer for more details.

Member Duties : The VISTA will reach out to past participants with unresolved counseling outcomes and provide referrals to participate in other NWSHC programs that aim to lift families out of poverty such as financial coaching and workforce development. The VISTA will conduct comprehensive local and national research on affordable housing trends. This research should result in an updated community needs assessment language the NWSCDC can use to leverage funding, and present new solutions and best practices other agencies across the nation are using to support rental participants. Create a comprehensive organizational resource guide to provide each and every program participant, regardless of their counseling outcomes. This will ensure that every participant is aware of the additional resources provided by the NWSHC/NWSCDC, and by other nonprofits and service organizations across the city of Chicago.
